Does the month of Ramadan get confirmed by visual sighting or astronomical calculation? Answered by Shaykh al-Albāni

Question: Does the month of Ramadan get confirmed by visual sighting or astronomical calculation?

Answer: Personally, I do not favour the opinion of some Ulema (scholars) who rely on these scientific observations to confirm the sighting of the crescent, because of the Prophet’s ﷺ saying in the authentic Ahadeeth: “We are an unlettered nation; we neither write nor calculate the month like this and like that. The month is such and such.” This means that the month may be either thirty days or one day less. Therefore, I do not see any confirmation of the crescent except through visual sighting, because that is what the Prophet ﷺ stated.

Translators notes:

The legislated method of establishing the month of Ramadan is by visually seeing the crescent moon. Shaykh al-Albāni رحمه الله deemed it incorrect to rely upon astronomical calculations. Rather he said, what is from the Sunnah is to see the moon with your eye to declare the beginning of Ramadan – As instructed in the Hadeeth of the messenger. ﷺ
