Abu Hanifa [D. 150 AH] was from the Murji’ah by Shaykh Rabee al-Madkhali

Is it true what is attributed to Abu Hanifa [D. 150 AH] that he was a Murji’?

Yes, this is true and nobody denied this. Abu Hanifa, may Allāh have mercy on him, did indeed fall into Irjaa, and this is not denied by the Hanafis or Ahlus Sunnah. It’s well-known, and the people of the Sunnah strongly criticized him for his Irjaa. They criticized him severely for his Murji’ beliefs among other things. May Allāh forgive him. This means that it is not permissible for a Hanafi or anyone else to follow anyone in his mistakes, whether it’s Abu Hanifa, Mālik or Shafi’i. However, we do not know of mistakes in Aqeedah (creed) from these scholars, but as for Abu Hanifa, he did fall into the erroneous statement of Khalq Al Qur’ān (creation of the Qur’ān) and later he retracted it, as confirmed by the scholars. As for his Irjaa, it was never confirmed that he retracted from it, and no one claims that he did, neither from the Hanafis nor others, as far as I know.
