The One Who Prays 20 Raka’āt Taraweeh Is An Opposer Of The Sunnah! Explained by Shaykh al-Albāni & Shaykh Muqbil رحمهم الله

Shaykh al-Albani رحمه الله was asked:

Question: Is the one who prays 20 Raka’āt for the Taraweeh Salah considered to have opposed the Sunnah?

Shaykh al-Albani رحمه الله answered: “If we pray 20 Raka’āt for Taraweeh Salah then we are considered to have opposed the Sunnah, that is because we know the Sunnah (is not to do so). As for the one who thinks that the (Taraweeh) prayer is 20 Raka’āt, then we say to him you have opposed the Sunnah.”

Shaykh Muqbil Ibn Hādi رحمه الله was asked:

Question: If I pray in a Masjid where the Imām prays 20 Raka’āt, should I complete 20 with him following the Imām or should I pray with him 8 Raka’āt and pray Witr alone then leave?

Answer: “I advise that you pray 8 Raka’āt and pray Witr alone. Following the Sunnah is more deserving, for verily the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

صَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي

And pray as you have seen me praying.”
